David Moyes has revealed that he has not communicated with Everton owner and chairman Dan Friedkin during the 20 months since returning as manager. On Friday, Moyes also responded firmly to the club’s disastrous conclusion to the transfer window, suggesting the setback could unite the players and supporters in pursuit of “something special” this season.
Moyes highlighted a remarkable lack of communication within Everton by confirming that he has had no direct contact with Friedkin, founder and chief executive of The Friedkin Group, since succeeding Sean Dyche in January 2025. Group president Marc Watts serves as Everton’s executive chairman, while Rishi Majithia, Friedkin’s son-in-law, handles the owner’s daily interests at the club. Questions about the group’s long-term plans have intensified following the transfer window, alongside reports that it may seek additional investment or consider selling Everton.
The Everton manager acknowledged that successful clubs require unity among their senior figures. He said the new ownership team was still becoming familiar with the organisation and that stronger relationships should improve matters. Moyes explained that chief executive Angus Kinnear remains his primary contact. When asked whether he had ever spoken to or met Dan Friedkin, he answered that he had not.
Everton’s troubled finish to the transfer window began when the ownership group decided to sell Harrison Armstrong to Nottingham Forest last weekend. The club reversed that decision following a strong reaction from supporters, but Moyes still ended the window with fewer options after Iliman Ndiaye, Beto, Tim Iroegbunam and Nathan Patterson departed.
Moyes said Everton may not have a large squad, but football sometimes demands an exceptional effort, and his team will try to produce one. He admitted the challenge would be difficult and recognised that managers are usually the first people held responsible when circumstances go wrong.
He added that Everton holds a unique place in his heart and that he would not have returned for another club. Moyes believes the supporters’ emotions can become a major source of strength for the team. With the squad lacking depth, he urged the fans to give the players additional backing and stressed how damaging it would be if that support disappeared.
Moyes remains convinced that Everton’s supporters are behind the team. He said his affection for the club has never faded and that returning as manager has renewed his enthusiasm. Although Everton has encountered a setback, he intends to overcome it quickly and find a way to restore stability.
