Chris Wilder, the head coach of Sheffield United, has put pen to paper on a new deal that will keep him at the club through to the close of the 2028 season.
Wilder made his way back to Bramall Lane last September under an agreement set to expire next year, but that arrangement has since been prolonged.
Now 58 years of age, he is embarking on his third tenure at the helm of the Blades and has overseen close to 450 fixtures for the side.
“Chris represents the ideal figure to guide Sheffield United, and we are absolutely delighted that he has pledged his long-term future to this organisation,” stated, external co-chairman Steven Rosen.
“His drive, his straightforward nature, and his grasp of what this outfit signifies to its fanbase have been evident to everyone involved.”
A lifelong follower of Sheffield United who later donned the shirt as a player, Wilder initially took up the managerial reins in 2016.
Over close to half a decade at the wheel, he steered the team to climb out of League One and the Championship, while also securing a ninth-place top-flight finish—their highest in the Premier League era.
Stints at Middlesbrough and Watford followed before he came back to the Blades in December 2023, stepping in for Paul Heckingbottom.
He could not stave off demotion from the Premier League during that campaign, and then saw his side place third before falling to Sunderland in a painful Championship play-off final defeat that denied them a return to the top tier.
Wilder parted ways with the club in the aftermath of that Wembley heartbreak—albeit for only three months—and was brought back following a dreadful run of results under the Spanish coach Ruben Selles.
The Blades wrapped up the season in 13th spot, their poorest showing in nine years, yet Wilder is resolute in his ambition to deliver far stronger results in the upcoming term.
He remarked: “We are putting in a great deal of effort away from the spotlight to ensure everything is in place for the coming season, and we will be striving relentlessly to make this year—and those that follow—triumphant ones for Sheffield United.”
