Real Madrid have previously demonstrated their solidarity with Ceuta. Ahead of their Champions League clash against Inter Milan at the Santiago Bernabeu on 8 September, fans in the south stand raised cards displaying the autonomous city’s coat of arms, with supporters throughout the stadium applauding the tribute.
The gesture formed part of a broader campaign supporting Ceuta after the Spanish territory experienced a severe migration crisis involving thousands of arrivals from Morocco.
At least 72,000 migrants entered Ceuta from Morocco on 30 and 31 July. Many reportedly swam around the border barrier, and figures provided by the city’s mayor indicated that at least 100 people lost their lives during the journey.
While the majority returned, up to 5,000 people are believed to remain in temporary camps or sleep on streets and beaches, contributing to tensions within the autonomous Spanish city in North Africa.
Some residents have raised concerns about security, while others have dismantled shelters and prevented assistance from reaching the migrants.
The incident occurred shortly before an eventful match for Real Madrid, who let a two-goal advantage slip before eventually defeating Elche 3-2 through Carlos Espi’s stoppage-time winner.
Mbappe scored one of Madrid’s goals, while Vinicius was named in the starting lineup.
The action before kickoff also revealed contrasting responses from players and clubs toward the campaign supporting Ceuta.
Barcelona chose not to participate, whereas players in other La Liga matches wore the designated shirts as planned.
