Cristiano Ronaldo has suggested that this will “probably” be his final season as a professional player, according to an interview published by Vogue on Sunday. The 41-year-old remains captain of Portugal.
Widely regarded as one of football’s greatest players, Ronaldo has scored more than 950 goals for club and country. He had previously indicated that he could retire “soon” or within the next “one or two years”.
The Al-Nassr forward said this was likely to be his last year in football and that he hoped to finish his career with an exceptional legacy. He added that he had already planned what he would do after retiring.
Ronaldo explained that he has numerous interests to occupy his time, including travelling and playing padel. He acknowledged that leaving football could create a significant void, making it important to pursue a variety of activities.
Ronaldo married his partner, Georgina Rodríguez, in a private ceremony in the Portuguese resort town of Cascais on Tuesday. The former Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus player said he wanted to enjoy the rewards that he and his family had earned after 25 years marked by considerable sacrifice.
Following Portugal’s run to the last 16 of this summer’s World Cup, Ronaldo is expected to rejoin Al-Nassr ahead of the new Saudi Pro League campaign.
