Darren: It is disappointing to see Davey Gray leave, but it is the right call. This outcome has seemed likely for quite some time. We should follow the example of Motherwell and Hearts by searching beyond Scotland for a manager who offers fresh thinking and an adventurous style of football, rather than appointing another traditional Scottish coach.
Robbie: David had an impressive spell, but it felt as though his tenure had reached its natural conclusion when last night’s match ended. The team’s home form has been particularly disappointing.
John: I am grateful for everything David contributed to the club, first as a player and later as a coach. He delivered two respectable seasons, including qualification for European competition. However, the players’ shortage of determination, commitment and leadership this season ultimately cost him his position. I wish him well and will always appreciate what he achieved in May 2016.
Colin: This is a sad moment, although the decision appeared unavoidable after last night’s result. I wish David Gray every success in the future. Hopefully, the club adopts a forward-thinking recruitment process for its next coach instead of relying on Malky’s familiar network.
Callum: Football is ultimately judged by results, and we have not delivered them despite having one of the club’s most expensive squads in years. The board should now appoint a dependable manager with proven experience.
Richard: David Gray can consider himself unlucky because he was only one part of a wider problem. Sporting director Malky Mackay should also lose his position, as both belonged to the same leadership structure and should share responsibility for the team’s failings.
Ben: Gray eventually managed to turn things around after a dreadful beginning, guiding us to third place and securing European qualification in consecutive seasons. Nevertheless, the team’s tactics and quality of football have not met expectations. It was painful to watch a club icon approach the supporters only to be met with boos, but by then even the most optimistic fans could find little reason for encouragement.
Sam: As a Hearts supporter, I am sincerely disappointed that David Gray has been dismissed. He gave Hibs valuable service. Although the manager inevitably carries responsibility for poor results, the greater issue is that the current squad lacks sufficient quality. Hibs are enduring a difficult period, but better times will eventually return.
Josh: If Hibs were prepared to dismiss Pat Stanton and Frank Sauzee, it was hardly surprising that Scottish Cup winner David Gray would eventually suffer the same fate. Looking at the poor quality of some defenders in the squad, it is difficult to see how he could have kept his job. I feel sorry for him.
Alex: I am sorry that David’s tenure ended this way and wish him every success. Unfortunately, the manager is usually the person who pays the price, but his players repeatedly failed to support him with adequate performances and were simply not good enough.
