West Ham midfielder Edson Alvarez has rejected claims linking him to the reported abduction of a film producer in Mexico.
Juan Jose Lopez Ordonez told Mexican outlet TV Notas, external that relatives of Jonathan Toache Bedolla, Alvarez’s former father-in-law, allegedly forced him into a vehicle at gunpoint in Mexico City’s Polanco district in 2024.
Ordonez alleged that Alvarez knew about the plan but did not personally take part. He also said he had been hired to produce a documentary about the footballer’s life and was still owed £150,000 for his work.
Alvarez, who first represented Mexico at senior level in 2017, denied the allegations in a social media statement and indicated that he may pursue legal action.
“I firmly deny every claim or effort to connect my name with incidents, disputes or actions in which I had no involvement,” wrote Alvarez, who captains the Mexican national team.
“For several months, my identity and public image have repeatedly been used to attract additional attention to a matter that is completely unconnected to me.
“I previously decided to remain silent, but a boundary has now been crossed. Suggesting that I knew about, was responsible for or participated in such serious events without providing any evidence is unacceptable.”
He also accused some media organisations of favouring sensational reports over factual accurate and truthful coverage, adding that his attention would remain on his family and football career.
Since arriving from Ajax in 2023, Alvarez has played 74 times for West Ham. His only appearance this season came against Portsmouth in the Carabao Cup.
