England turned a disrupted night in Orlando into an encouraging final World Cup warm-up, beating Costa Rica 3-0 after a severe thunderstorm delayed kick-off by an hour. Once the match began, Thomas Tuchel’s side quickly found control and produced the kind of polished display that will strengthen belief ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
Declan Rice set the tone early, scoring inside the opening 10 minutes with an effort that took a deflection on its way in. The goal rewarded England’s fast start as they dominated possession, pressed high and moved the ball with purpose. Rather than allowing the unusual circumstances to unsettle them, England used the occasion to underline their growing rhythm and authority.
There were more positives for Tuchel as the game developed. Anthony Gordon brought energy and direct running in attack and got on the scoresheet in the 66th minute from the penalty spot. Ollie Watkins then added the third with a late header, putting the finishing touch on a convincing team performance. England could have won by an even bigger margin, with Noni Madueke lively throughout despite missing an open goal and striking the post.
Beyond the result, the performance offered useful evidence that England’s tactical shape is taking hold at the right moment. Rice again provided control and drive in midfield, while Gordon strengthened his case for a larger role during the tournament. Marcus Rashford’s involvement also added to the sense that Tuchel has genuine depth and flexibility in attacking areas.
A clean sheet, three goals and several standout individual displays made this exactly the kind of final rehearsal England wanted. The storm may have delayed the start, but by full-time the message was clear: England head into the World Cup looking settled, dangerous and full of momentum.
