Gianni Infantino: Can Anyone Prevent the FIFA President's Re-Election?

Gianni Infantino: Can Anyone Prevent the FIFA President’s Re-Election?

News

Infantino’s first remarks following the collapse of FFE contained criticism of its opponents.

Since then, he has adopted a more accommodating tone, possibly recognizing that cooperation could prove more effective in achieving his goals.

Speaking at a conference in Cape Verde, he acknowledged that concerns can emerge during any journey.

He added that such concerns must be addressed, saying Fifa remains committed to open and constructive dialogue while continually seeking ways to improve.

Should Infantino remain in his position, as widely anticipated, Uefa intends to push for changes to Fifa’s governance.

However, Uefa could encounter resistance to those proposals.

Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa, who leads the Asian confederation and serves as a Fifa vice-president and Council member, was previously a strong critic of Infantino.

This week, however, Al Khalifa wrote to Ceferin, Montagliani and Infantino to reject the idea of completely overhauling Fifa’s governance structure.

According to Al Khalifa, reforms should be led by football’s own governing institutions instead of being assigned to an outside organization.

That position reduces Uefa’s chances of securing the outcome it is seeking.

Uefa is also calling for every country to receive an extra $10m (£7.6m) from Fifa’s reserves, which stand at approximately $6bn (£4.5bn).

Paradoxically, accepting that request could further strengthen Infantino’s hold on the presidency.

Financial support, after all, can help the Fifa president secure votes.
