Barcelona maintained their flawless start to the season after battling to a 4-2 La Liga win against Levante in Valencia on Sunday.
Quick attacking moves helped Barcelona establish a two-goal advantage inside 19 minutes, with Xavi Espart and Lamine Yamal finding the net. Levante responded strongly and ended the first half with six attempts compared with Barcelona’s three.
Only 42 seconds after the restart, Barcelona received a penalty that Lamine Yamal both earned and converted. The 19-year-old has now scored twice in each of his last three La Liga appearances.
A misplaced ball from Espart gave Iván Romero the opportunity to go around goalkeeper Joan García and score for Levante with 12 minutes remaining. Roger Brugue then evaded several Barcelona tackles before adding the hosts’ second goal with two minutes left.
Levante’s chances of completing the comeback disappeared in the 93rd minute when Karim Adeyemi produced a weaving run and composed finish.
Barcelona sit alone at the summit after winning all five matches, giving them a three-point advantage over Real Madrid.
RB Leipzig recovered from their Champions League loss at Como by cruising to a 5-0 home victory over struggling Hamburg in Sunday’s Bundesliga action.
Norwegian winger Antonio Nusa delivered the standout performance, scoring once and providing two assists. One of those set up Christopher Nkunku for his first goal since returning to Leipzig in August.
Tidiam Gomis, Willi Orban and Romulo were also among the scorers as Leipzig moved up to fourth place.
“It is easy to spend too much time dwelling on the past after losing two matches. That is difficult, but you must keep moving forward,” Nusa said.
“We needed to deliver today, and we did. I think we struck the right balance between leaving the past behind and approaching this match aggressively.”
A third heavy loss in as many league games this season leaves six-time German champions Hamburg at the bottom of the standings.
Elsewhere in Spain on Sunday, Getafe welcome Deportivo A Coruña before Atlético Madrid travel to face Real Sociedad.
In another major Bundesliga fixture, unbeaten Bayern Munich visit newly promoted Elversberg, who have won both of their opening matches. In Italy, Napoli entertain Bologna, while Juventus travel to Sassuolo. Paris Saint-Germain, with only two points from three games, will look to revive their Ligue 1 season away to Brest.
