When Moyes began his second spell as Everton manager in January 2025, the club sat 16th in the table and only one point above the relegation places.
Although expectations have increased since then, he was keen to highlight how far the team has come under his leadership.
“I heard plenty of people claim last season was disappointing, but I could not understand that view because it was complete nonsense.
“What we achieved was remarkable. We had no money, were close to relegation and had to deal with the challenge of moving into a new stadium, something that has rarely been straightforward for any club. Despite all of that, we nearly accomplished something truly special.”
Reflecting on Everton’s unbeaten run, former England midfielder Danny Murphy said: “A team managed by David Moyes is always capable of producing these results.
“They are disciplined, highly motivated and particularly threatening when placed under pressure. Supporters have expressed considerable frustration with the ownership and a recruitment strategy that left the squad lacking attacking options.
“However, the rest of the team has excellent balance. Every player understands their responsibilities, while the defence and goalkeeper form a dependable unit. For that reason, I never believed failing to sign another striker would become a major crisis.
“Their organisation and defensive strength allow them to collect points even when their overall performance is below its best. The supporters’ concerns are understandable, but I never expected the shortage of forward cover to put the club in serious trouble.
“The squad may lack depth, but it still contains plenty of ability.”
Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford described the result as an encouraging conclusion to this stage of the campaign. Because of the international break, the Toffees will not return to league competition until 11 October, when they are scheduled to meet Hull City.
“You need to remain determined because that is part of Everton’s identity,” Pickford said. “Our momentum is growing, and we will return focused and fully prepared. It was an excellent result with which to end the week.”
Discussing goalscorer Barry, who scored only eight times last season but now appears increasingly dangerous, Pickford said: “His effort is outstanding, and continued hard work will bring more goals. A player’s first Premier League campaign is never easy, but he has now settled in and made a much stronger start this season.
“Securing a victory before an extended international break is always the ideal way to finish.”
