4. Riyad Mahrez, Leicester, 2015-16, £5.5m
Riyad Mahrez proved to be an exceptional bargain for Claudio Ranieri and fantasy managers during Leicester’s championship-winning campaign. He began the season with a 15-point performance against Sunderland, immediately benefiting the 5.9% of players who had selected him.
That opening display was only the beginning. Mahrez recorded at least 10 points in five of the first six gameweeks and accumulated 56 points during that period, making it one of the strongest starts in the game’s history. His ownership rose rapidly, exceeding 50% by the seventh week.
Jamie Vardy also enjoyed an outstanding campaign, producing either a goal or an assist in 15 consecutive gameweeks. However, his initial price was £0.5m higher than Mahrez’s.
Despite beginning at a relatively low price, Mahrez ended the season as the game’s leading scorer with 240 points.
3. Michu, Swansea, 2012-13, £6.5m
Fantasy football often inspires a strong sense of affection and nostalgia, with managers becoming attached to the players who consistently deliver points for their teams.
Michu became a cult favourite after arriving as a largely unfamiliar name and going on to collect 190 points. His value increased by £2m over the course of the season.
He is widely regarded as one of the most memorable one-season sensations in fantasy football history.
Observant managers knew that the Spaniard had scored 15 times in La Liga during the previous campaign. Those who selected him from the start were rewarded when he struck twice away to QPR on the opening weekend.
Listed as a £6.5m midfielder despite playing like a forward, Michu quickly became a popular selection and completed the 2012-13 season with an impressive total of 18 goals.
He scored only twice in the following campaign before moving to Napoli.
