Gareth Southgate: Ex-England manager unlikely to take charge of a club again

News

Former England head coach Gareth Southgate says he cannot imagine returning to manage a Premier League club.

The 56-year-old has not held a managerial position since stepping down as England boss following their defeat by Spain in the Euro 2024 final.

Southgate also led England to the Euro 2020 final, while his last club role was a three-year spell in charge of Middlesbrough that began in 2006.

Asked whether he might consider managing in the Premier League again, Southgate said he could not envisage circumstances in which that would happen.

He explained that during the closing stages of his England tenure, he went through a period when he no longer found the job enjoyable, although victories initially helped sustain him.

By the end, however, even winning brought him satisfaction for only a few minutes, and he has watched very little football since leaving the role.

Southgate attended the FA Cup final to watch Crystal Palace, the club he supports, claim their first major trophy, but he has not returned to a stadium since. He said his desire to remain involved in football has changed.

Since leaving the England job, Southgate has worked in media and presented a documentary examining the difficulties faced by young men and boys across the United Kingdom.

He has also served as a visiting lecturer at Harvard Business School in Boston.

Southgate said he has thoroughly enjoyed the past 18 months of his life.

After spending 37 years allowing weekend results to shape how he felt about himself, he has welcomed the opportunity to pursue different experiences. He has met politicians and media professionals, explored leadership in various fields and travelled around the world to broaden his knowledge.

He described this period as an enjoyable new chapter in his life.
