Fifa and president Gianni Infantino have faced allegations of betraying confidence “through deception” in an open letter released by Uefa, Concacaf and the Asian Football Confederation.
Signed by the organisations’ presidents and general secretaries, the letter stated that the dispute surrounding the Fifa Forward Enterprise (FFE) plan ultimately concerned “the integrity of the game, and the integrity of those elected to lead it”.
Under the FFE proposal, a new business would have been established to oversee the commercial and ticketing rights for every Fifa tournament, including the World Cups. A 21% stake would then have been sold to a private investment firm.
The plan was abandoned following extensive opposition from several confederations. Uefa led the criticism and warned that it could boycott all Fifa competitions.
The letter said that leadership responsibilities are neglected when confidence is destroyed by dishonesty and one person puts himself above the wider group that granted him authority.
Although Infantino was not directly identified in the statement, sources indicated that the message could be viewed as an opportunity for him to step down from his role in a dignified manner.
The letter followed a statement released by Fifa on Saturday evening, in which the organisation strongly condemned what it described as a coordinated and continuing campaign intended to weaken both Fifa and Infantino.
It also requested that a completely independent third party carry out a review, after Fifa pledged to submit a report to the Fifa Council in October.
