‘He simply desires the finest version of ourselves’: Harry Kane embraces Tuchel’s criticism | World Cup 2026

Harry Kane has stated that Thomas Tuchel’s pointed assessment of England’s display following their quarter-final victory over Norway in Miami stemmed from the team’s inability to replicate their high-level practice sessions during actual matches.

The captain of the England side also implied that Tuchel’s remarks were a deliberate move to maintain the squad’s sharpness ahead of Wednesday’s semi-final against Argentina in Atlanta, noting that the manager “understands better than most that it’s not merely a straightforward process… he is trying to extract that higher performance from us.”

Tuchel has shown his irritation at different stages of the competition with the side’s lack of fluidity and poise. He was openly critical after the Norway match, stating his dissatisfaction with the team’s showing “across the board.” The German coach pointed to an excessive number of technical errors, a lack of tempo, and suggested the side had been “fortunate.”

This critique prompted a sharp reply from Jude Bellingham, who scored both goals in the 2-1 win, a match that went into extra time and was played in intense heat and humidity. “Yeah, well, whatever,” Bellingham responded, later adding in another interview: “Maybe he doesn’t fully grasp what it’s like to play in those sorts of conditions against Erling Haaland, [Martin] Ødegaard, [Antonio] Nusa, [Alexander] Sørloth.”

On the one hand, this was a striking piece of squad management from Tuchel, delivered after one of the most impressive results in England’s World Cup history. On the other, it should not have been unexpected, given his tendency for bluntness and his relentless drive for perfection.

Kane was eager to defuse the situation. “When he observes us in training, he sees the unity and our potential, particularly with the talent in our squad, our attacking play, our one‑on‑ones and individual flair… he simply wants to see that version of us out on the pitch,” Kane explained. “He knows as well as anyone that it’s not a simple matter, as we are facing strong opponents and top sides. He’s pushing to pull it out of us, and we are aware within the group that we have another level we are yet to reach.

“That level hasn’t appeared yet. We’ve only displayed it in flashes. The same was true against Norway – just glimpses. We haven’t achieved the kind of sustained command we desire and which I believe we are capable of. But at this point in a tournament, you are meeting the best international sides on the planet. We will be facing one of those very teams in the semi-final.

“The most positive aspect is that we find ourselves in a semi-final while still feeling there is room to grow. I don’t believe this is a cause for extreme reactions. We are demonstrating plenty of positives – our collective defensive effort against Norway, our attacking movement… we still produced some excellent sequences. And Jude delivered for us once more with another pair of goals.”

Tuchel stated before the Norway fixture that England “must deliver a higher standard” and detailed several areas to address. These included the construction of play, breaking the opponent’s high press, occupying more dangerous spaces in the attacking third, and executing their own counterpress more effectively.

The manager also remarked that his players were overanalysing when on the ball, to the extent they were failing to spot moments to break forward. It has been hard to overlook the feeling that Tuchel recognises he needs to adapt his approach for the constraints of an international side; there simply isn’t the same coaching time available as with a club. But he is clearly finding these necessary adjustments an irritation.

“I am aware this is going to be a talking point between now and the next match,” Kane said. “We know our performance level can rise, but ultimately we are playing in a World Cup semi-final, and that hasn’t always been the case for this country’s team, so we should embrace it.

“Conditions were difficult out there against Norway, with the heat and humidity. We can certainly be better in possession. We know that without a doubt. But right here, right now, we want to enjoy this moment. The preparation will start soon enough for the next game, and we will strive to improve our play on the ball as much as we can.

“This period has been incredibly successful for our national team, reaching multiple semi-finals and finals, and our aim now is to finally get across the finish line. That is the element that has remained elusive. We’ve been together for six weeks and demonstrated every ounce of commitment to the shirt. We’ll need to find an even greater effort for this final stretch now.”
