Hearts secure Laurent Mendy for Forest Green Rovers record fee of almost £1m

News

The previous year, Mendy made the switch alongside Savage from Macclesfield to Forest Green, where he featured in 47 matches and became a regular presence in the side as the Gloucestershire club ended the campaign seventh and saw their promotion hopes ended by a play-off quarter-final loss.

According to Forest Green, the departure of their skipper could ultimately be worth a club-record sum rising to nearly £1m.

Hearts, runners-up in last season’s Scottish Premiership, stated they identified Mendy as an outstanding performer for Forest Green.

The Edinburgh outfit have summarised him as: “Imposing and physical, Laurent’s adaptability proved vital as Rovers secured a play-off place last term. Regularly fielded in central defence, his ability on the ball meant he could push forward and operate as an additional midfielder.”

Hailing from France, Mendy worked his way through the lower levels of the English game with Thamesmead Town, Greenwich Borough, Whyteleafe, Ashford United, Dartford, and VCD Athletic, then had a year in Sweden with Amal before spending four seasons at Macclesfield.
