Woking’s head of football operations Jody Brown acknowledged that “growing unease” had been building within the club before the National League outfit decided to move on from ex-England forward Jermain Defoe as head coach.
Earlier this week, both sides came to a “mutual agreement to separate, effective immediately,” bringing an end to the 43-year-old’s tenure after just four months and half a dozen league fixtures.
His departure occurred a fortnight before Woking were set to kick off the new campaign against Sutton United.
“Jermain consistently offered upbeat assessments and often voiced his eagerness and optimism for the upcoming season, both in public and behind closed doors,” Brown explained., external
“It is therefore understandable that his abrupt exit came as a shock and prompted plenty of questions.
“Yet, over the past few weeks, word had come in from all corners of the club—athletes, personnel and various sections—pointing to mounting worries.”
Brown noted that this prompted him to request a short briefing from Defoe and his deputy Paul Bracewell “covering the current make-up of the squad, transfer targets and any practical hurdles” so he could extend the “necessary backing,” yet despite repeated requests, the document “was not forthcoming.”
“As a result, a gathering was arranged with the board, manager, assistant manager and operations chief to assess preparations for the season,” he continued.
“Neither Jermain nor his number two showed up for that discussion or for the training session scheduled that day.
“During his entire time with us, Jermain never brought any significant issues to my attention directly, so I won’t attempt to guess his motives.”
Defoe struck 305 goals across 763 first-team outings for sides such as West Ham, Tottenham, Portsmouth and Sunderland, alongside 20 strikes in 57 caps for his country, before hanging up his boots in 2022.
He served on a temporary coaching panel at Rangers in 2021 and later worked within Tottenham’s youth system, departing in 2024 with the aim of landing a permanent managerial post.
Defoe described his spell at Woking as “a revealing first step into management and one that will certainly steel me for whatever comes next in my professional journey.”
Brown took ownership of the decision to hire the “affable” Defoe, convinced he “was the ideal candidate to steer the club into a promising new chapter.”
Yet he added: “As has often been witnessed, achievements on the pitch do not automatically carry over into coaching and leadership. I genuinely hope he thrives in whatever path he pursues next.”
