England’s attacking quartet earned plenty of credit after tearing apart Croatia’s defence.
All-time leading scorer Harry Kane struck twice, Bukayo Saka also claimed a brace, while Anthony Gordon contributed both a goal and an assist.
Kane will once again command attention on Tuesday, when he could draw level with Peter Shilton’s record for the most appearances by an England men’s player as the Czech Republic visit Wembley.
By taking his international tally to 89 goals, the 33-year-old underlined his enduring value to England. However, when he was withdrawn for a rest with 20 minutes remaining, Bellingham inherited the captain’s armband.
That decision demonstrated the younger player’s growing influence as one of the squad’s leaders.
For the first time in an England match, Bellingham played a direct role in more than two goals. He also became the first Three Lions player to provide three assists in one game since Trent Alexander-Arnold achieved the feat against San Marino in November 2021.
Former England forward Ian Wright was particularly impressed by Bellingham’s work in attacking areas.
Wright said that Bellingham constantly looks to surge forward and repeatedly joins England’s attacks whenever he is on the field.
He praised the midfielder’s all-round contribution, highlighting his athletic qualities, technical skill and relentless intensity. Wright also noted Bellingham’s ability to enter the penalty area unnoticed and consistently find dangerous positions.
Bellingham displayed the full range of his abilities against Croatia, prompting Tuchel to be asked whether the midfielder had reached a new level.
Tuchel agreed that this currently appeared to be the case and stressed that players must continue improving.
He explained that standing still is not an option, because teams must keep developing and striving for higher standards or risk being overtaken by their rivals.
Tuchel described the display as an opportunity to put the disappointment of England’s World Cup semi-final defeat by Argentina behind them. He also revealed that he made several changes after the tournament and entrusted players such as Bellingham with greater responsibility.
Saka featured alongside Bellingham in the attacking four and scored his first goal after meeting an excellent cross from the midfielder.
Saka described Bellingham’s performance as outstanding.
He said his teammate fully merited both the player-of-the-year honour and the match award, adding that Bellingham had delivered an exceptional display.
Saka added that he enjoys playing alongside Bellingham and is delighted to have him in the England squad.
