Kosovare Asllani, the captain of London City Lionesses, is expected to agree to a one-year renewal of her contract even though she sustained a severe injury.
In March, the club announced that the Swedish national team player had incurred a “complex multi-ligament injury” which involved a torn anterior cruciate ligament.
The 36-year-old is set to face a tough fight to be fit for the following campaign, and her existing deal was scheduled to come to an end this summer.
Nevertheless, it has been revealed that London City Lionesses have offered Asllani a one-year extension to support her rehabilitation from the long-term injury, even though she is unlikely to play for the side again.
As the Women’s World Cup is set to be held in Brazil next year, the Swedish captain, who has earned more than 200 international appearances, will be aiming to recover in time to participate.
Asllani was a key figure in steering London City to winning the second division in 2024-25, before registering two goals and three assists in 19 top-flight outings last season.
She is a beloved figure among the supporters and has been an essential player throughout her two-year tenure at the club.
In related news, midfielder Malou Marcetto of London City Lionesses, who also sustained multiple knee ligament tears during the last WSL match of the campaign, is reportedly making encouraging progress at the beginning of her post-surgery recovery.
The club, which is owned by American billionaire Michele Kang, operates independently and is not linked to any men’s side.
They ended their inaugural Women’s Super League season in 2025-26 in sixth place and are now setting their sights on challenging for a spot in the Champions League next term.
Kang has earlier expressed her commitment to funding the women’s sport and offering proper medical support, a principle demonstrated by the short-term contract extension for Asllani.
The team managed by Eder Maestre has also been strengthened during the transfer period by the remarkable signing of two-time Ballon d’Or recipient Alexia Putellas, who moved from Barcelona to London City this month.
Additionally, they have recruited Spanish central defender Mapi Leon, ex-England goalkeeper Mary Earps, Danish defender Janni Thomsen, and German attacker Nicole Anyomi.
It is believed that London City are also aiming to secure an additional forward option, alongside other future signings.
