Iliman Ndiaye believes it is impossible to turn down an approach from Manchester City and feels he deserves the opportunity to compete in the Champions League.
The 26-year-old had the option of joining Tottenham but instead completed a £60m deadline-day transfer from Everton to City. He immediately entered the starting line-up and helped his new club secure a 1-0 Premier League win against Coventry at the weekend.
During the closing week of the transfer window, Ndiaye appeared set to join Spurs after an agreement was reached with Everton. However, the deal could not move forward because Tottenham were unable to sell Richarlison.
“I never felt worried or under pressure,” Ndiaye said.
“My approach has always been to accept whatever happens. I believe God determines your path and that everything has already been planned.
“I stayed patient, and I was thrilled when City made their move. From that moment, they were always my choice.
“I wanted to compete in the Champions League and represent one of the leading clubs in world football. I respect Tottenham, but an opportunity to join Manchester City is not something you reject.
“It has been an excellent week, and finishing it with a victory made it even better.”
Although Everton ended both of his seasons in the lower half of the standings, Ndiaye became a popular figure among supporters thanks to his ability on the wings and his total of 17 goals.
“I told my wife that, if I ever left Everton, I wanted to join a club where I would have the chance to play in the Champions League,” he said.
“Leaving Everton was not easy because I had developed a strong relationship with the supporters and my team-mates. Still, football sometimes requires you to take the next step.”
