Manchester United manager Michael Carrick is committed to strengthening his squad further this summer.
Carrick is preparing for his first complete Premier League season in charge at Old Trafford.
He fully understands the responsibility of representing a club with such an enormous global profile and describes leading it as a “privilege”.
That position also requires him to answer difficult questions from the media, including concerns about the club’s perceived shortage of new arrivals.
Carrick is pleased with United’s transfer activity so far. The club have paid £83m to bring in Andrey Santos from Chelsea and Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa, while free agent Karl Darlow has arrived as a reserve goalkeeper.
Nevertheless, United still need reinforcements at left-back and in central midfield as they prepare to return to the Champions League following a two-year absence, and Carrick accepts that recruitment must continue.
United have missed out on major targets including Elliot Anderson and Matheus Fernandes after choosing not to equal competing bids. With newly promoted Ipswich and Coventry also spending more, Carrick believes additional deals are necessary, although the club remains determined not to repeat expensive errors from previous transfer windows.
“We still want and require further additions, so we will continue exploring what can be achieved,” he said.
“I understand the financial side. We believe we should compete for every competition we enter, while also recognising what the club has experienced in recent years.
“We must get the best from our current situation, but we also need to test every limit possible so that we can start winning again.
“That is the task in front of us.”
