Celta Vigo’s opening La Liga fixture of the season against Osasuna has been delayed after a fungal infestation damaged the playing surface at Estadio de Balaidos, the Spanish club confirmed on Thursday.
Celta were scheduled to welcome Osasuna on Sunday, but both teams and the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) agreed to postpone the match following a technical assessment conducted by La Liga.
Inspectors determined that fungus had harmed the Balaidos pitch. Unfavourable weather also disrupted recent restoration efforts, leaving the surface unsuitable for play.
“La Liga, working alongside the two clubs and the RFEF, decided to postpone Sunday’s match between Celta and CA Osasuna at Abanca Balaidos because of an issue with the stadium’s playing surface, which is not currently suitable for football,” the league stated.
