Andre Onana, the shot-stopper for Manchester United, has returned to Trabzonspor in Turkey for a season-long loan covering the 2026-27 campaign.
The terms of the deal do not include a purchase option, though the Turkish club will take on the entirety of Onana’s salary throughout the loan period.
Additionally, Trabzonspor will pay United a borrowing fee for the 30-year-old Cameroonian goalkeeper, with a number of achievable performance-related bonuses built into the contract.
An official release from United noted that the transfer is pending international clearance and formal registration.
Onana featured 29 times for Trabzonspor during the previous season after being sent out on loan by United following their surprising EFL Cup exit at the hands of League Two side Grimsby last August.
That penalty shootout defeat at Blundell Park turned out to be his sole appearance for United that term.
He wrapped up the season by playing a key role as Trabzonspor claimed the Turkish Cup, their first triumph in that competition since 2020.
Onana, who arrived from Inter Milan in 2023 for a fee of £47.2 million, still has two years remaining on his United contract and had originally been expected to report back for pre-season training on 9 July.
He was aware, however, that displacing Senne Lammens as head coach Michael Carrick’s primary option was not a realistic possibility.
With Lammens currently away with the Belgian national team at the World Cup, the situation regarding United’s second-choice goalkeeper Altay Bayindir also remains up in the air.
Talented young keeper Radek Vitek is hoping to secure a transfer before pre-season preparations commence, meaning Carrick could find himself with a group of relatively unproven goalkeepers, alongside experienced veteran Tom Heaton, for the opening friendly against Wrexham in Helsinki on 17 July.
