Howe undoubtedly established a high benchmark.
The English coach inherited a team battling relegation and guided them to safety. He later ended Newcastle’s lengthy trophy drought by lifting the EFL Cup in 2025, while also securing Champions League qualification more than once.
Yet the previous domestic campaign proved difficult, with Newcastle ending the season in 12th. Howe also saw Alexander Isak, Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon depart within the space of a year.
The club are also expected to lose another influential figure, as captain Bruno Guimaraes prepares to join Arsenal.
Following Howe’s decision to leave, Newcastle require a forward-thinking coach capable of beginning a fresh era and building upon the finest achievements of his tenure.
Jaissle’s main task will be to improve his players and compete beyond expectations against clubs operating with larger salary budgets. Newcastle’s squad can also anticipate training sessions every bit as demanding as those led by his predecessor.
“We played many small-sided matches to maintain a high tempo, and he would directly challenge anyone who was not putting in maximum effort,” former Salzburg midfielder Zlatko Junuzovic said.
“He never hesitates to confront an issue directly.”
Although Jaissle has had limited time to become familiar with his new squad, he inherits players already accustomed to comparable ideas under Howe, alongside promising young arrivals keen to develop.
He is also accompanied by a team of coaches and analysts tasked with helping the players understand and implement his approach quickly.
Al-Ahli defender Merih Demiral is particularly familiar with their influence.
“It mattered greatly that we were excited to attend training each day,” he said. “They focused closely on every aspect and consistently ensured that we were completely ready.
“Matthias assembled an excellent support team, and their contribution was a major factor in what we achieved.”
Jaissle and his coaching staff will take charge of a squad whose average age has fallen considerably during the summer.
Even so, the German coach is expected to lean on seasoned figures such as Dan Burn and Fabian Schar for leadership inside the dressing room.
Jaissle, who previously played in defence for Hoffenheim, was slightly younger than Junuzovic when he became Salzburg’s head coach in 2021.
Despite that, he openly told the midfielder that competing alongside the team’s younger players would be challenging.
He pushed Junuzovic to raise his level and prove that he deserved a starting role, then honoured that commitment once the midfielder succeeded.
“He knows how to communicate with players,” the former Austria international explained.
