Northern Ireland manager Michael O’Neill expressed confidence that the Irish Football Association can advance its plans to open a national training centre by 2028.
In February 2025, the IFA unveiled proposals for a modern facility beside the Galgorm Resort near Ballymena, featuring top-quality pitches and advanced training amenities.
The association reaffirmed its commitment to the project last month while stating that it would seek to address concerns raised by nearby residents wherever possible.
O’Neill, who was raised in Ballymena, believes the proposed Galgorm centre would benefit the local area.
“A national training centre is important because it gives young players a place they can become familiar with from an early age. Providing an elite environment also demonstrates the association’s ambition to keep developing talent,” he said.
“Our current squad is young, with many players progressing through the JD academy, and that is something to celebrate. However, the centre would support not only the senior side but also youth squads and the women’s team.”
“I remain optimistic. Although I am not responsible for approving the proposal, I believe it would be valuable for Ballymena, strengthen the town and, hopefully, continue moving forward.”
