Should Guardiola signal a desire to take on a new managerial role, would the FA formally reach out to him?
The England side has just claimed a third-place finish at the World Cup, marking their best performance in a men’s competition since their 1966 triumph.
Nevertheless, head coach Thomas Tuchel has faced significant backlash following the 2-1 semifinal defeat to Argentina, with critics arguing that his defensive switches ultimately prevented the Three Lions from preserving their 1-0 lead.
Tuchel, 52, agreed to a two-year extension in February after initially taking charge in January 2025, and he continues to have the governing body’s support.
Yet former England skipper Wayne Rooney suggested the FA might opt to “go and get” Guardiola should the opportunity arise.
“At this moment, I don’t see another option out there, unless you approach Pep Guardiola. If Pep becomes free, then perhaps you make that move,” Rooney stated on The Wayne Rooney Show after England’s loss to Argentina.
“If we dismiss him [Tuchel], which coaches are available to replace him? And I believe there’s no one currently who matches Thomas Tuchel’s caliber, excluding Guardiola.”
The FA had reached out to Guardiola prior to hiring Tuchel, and reports indicated a verbal agreement, external was in place, with Guardiola staying at Manchester City.
Throughout his ten years in English football, Guardiola collected 20 major honors, including six Premier League titles, three FA Cups, five League Cups, and three Community Shields.
He also lifted the Champions League trophy in 2023, subsequently adding the Uefa Super Cup and the Fifa Club World Cup to his list of achievements.
