Bayern Munich winger Jamal Musiala has said he is experiencing “treatable absence seizures” after collapsing on the field for the second time within four days.
Musiala went down eight minutes after entering as a substitute during Bayern’s friendly against Heidenheim on Tuesday evening. The 23-year-old had experienced a similar episode in Saturday’s friendly with RB Leipzig, but he stressed that the condition does not pose a long-term danger to his health.
“Most importantly, I am feeling well, and I am deeply thankful for all your messages and support,” Musiala wrote on Instagram. “I know many people are concerned, so I want to reassure everyone and clarify what has happened.
“Doctors have diagnosed me with short and temporary absence seizures caused by a neurological disorder, and the condition can be treated. These seizures can result in episodes like those that occurred in the matches against Leipzig and Heidenheim.
“Although the incidents may appear frightening, they are currently something I must manage in my daily life. I am receiving outstanding medical treatment and feel very positive about the future. FC Bayern and those closest to me are providing constant support. Most importantly, the condition presents no additional health danger.”
The Germany international continued: “After regular discussions and close coordination with medical specialists, I decided that I wanted to confront this situation directly. With approval from my neurologists, I intend to keep doing what supports my recovery best: living normally and continuing to follow my passion for football.”
Musiala replaced Ismael Saibari in the 61st minute against Heidenheim but was substituted for Cassiano Kiala only eight minutes later. He looked disoriented while receiving treatment and needed assistance to leave the pitch. Bayern sporting director Max Eberl sought to ease concerns shortly after the final whistle.
“Jamal will address the matter himself soon. We already knew about it and fully understand the circumstances,” Eberl said.
Bayern secured a 4-2 victory, with Felipe Chávez, Arijon Ibrahimovic, Luis Díaz and Nathaniel Brown scoring. Musiala had also needed medical assistance after collapsing during the earlier friendly against RB Leipzig.
