Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden has put pen to paper on a new four-year contract, keeping him at the club until 2030.
His previous deal had been set to run out at the end of the upcoming season, but he chose to extend his stay under new head coach Enzo Maresca.
Handed his senior debut at 17 by former manager Pep Guardiola, Foden has since amassed 369 appearances for the club, collecting six league championships, one Champions League title and two FA Cups.
He was omitted from Thomas Tuchel’s England World Cup squad in May after an uneven campaign in which he started only 23 league matches.
Foden says he “cannot wait” to work with Maresca again, the Italian having served as Guardiola’s assistant during City’s Treble-winning 2022-23 season.
“Pledging my long-term future to City means everything to me. Playing for this club is all I have ever wanted to do, and it is always an honour to pull on the shirt,” Foden stated.
“I am fully aware that I have been fortunate to be part of such a historic, trophy-filled period, yet we are constantly looking ahead and striving to win more.
“I am really excited to team up with Enzo again. He was outstanding during the Treble season – someone all the players respected and loved working alongside.”
Alongside John Stones and Bernardo Silva, Foden is the club’s most decorated player, having spent his entire City career under Guardiola, whose celebrated 10-year reign ended in May.
Foden raised the bar with his displays the year after the Treble, registering a career-best 27 goals and 12 assists.
The two subsequent seasons proved less productive as his role in the side evolved.
Last season, the speedier wide options of Jeremy Doku and Antoine Semenyo supplied striker Erling Haaland from the flanks, while Rayan Cherki was often favoured as the playmaker in an attacking midfield position.
That meant Foden occasionally featured in deeper areas, limiting his chances to find the net and deliver the killer pass.
In the most recent league campaign, he scored seven goals and provided five assists in 33 Premier League games; the previous season he managed seven goals and two assists across 28 top-flight appearances.
After missing out on Tuchel’s World Cup selection this summer, the Professional Footballers’ Association said Foden had been a “casualty” of football’s congested fixture list, adding he “has not been the same player we witnessed two years ago”.
