Just when Bournemouth’s Alex Scott appeared to have taken complete control of midfield on Tyneside, another player stepped forward to spoil his impressive afternoon.
Jacob Ramsey has spent much of his time on the fringes since Matthias Jaissle replaced Eddie Howe as Newcastle manager, but the substitute produced an expertly taken equaliser in the 88th minute, forcing Scott and his teammates to settle for a draw.
Jaissle and Marco Rose are both German coaches shaped by the Red Bull managerial system, and each has previously been in charge of RB Salzburg. Their approaches emphasize direct play, high intensity and persistent pressing, but any tactical setup depends on the players carrying it out. In Scott, Rose had an intelligent and perceptive midfielder capable of controlling the center of the pitch.
Before Ramsey entered the match, Bournemouth had enough opportunities to secure their first victory under Rose. However, they once again failed to protect a lead, and Ramsey’s late intervention allowed Newcastle to escape with a respectable point.
