La Liga president Javier Tebas on Tuesday rejected what he described as Real Madrid’s claims of a refereeing “conspiracy” following their derby loss to Atlético Madrid.
Real Madrid manager José Mourinho arrived at his post-match press conference with two printed images showing challenges by Atlético players that he believed deserved red cards after Sunday’s 2-1 defeat.
Tebas reacted to a social media article supporting Real Madrid, publishing a detailed response in which he dismissed suggestions of a plot against the 15-time European champions.
“Once again, their supporters in the media are repeating the familiar story of an ongoing conspiracy,” said Tebas, who has frequently clashed with Real Madrid and the club’s outspoken president, Florentino Pérez.
“The article goes even further by suggesting that officials are damaging ‘the business that supports them’. What is it really demanding? Should decisions depend on income, television audiences, or the crest on a team’s shirt? That is a troubling interpretation of fairness in the competition.
“Real Madrid play a vital role in La Liga, but saying the league has no value without them shows disrespect toward every other club, along with their supporters and traditions. No single team owns the competition.”
Madrid have endured an inconsistent opening to the season and are six points behind defending champions and current leaders Barcelona.
“The idea that referees are being instructed to act against Real Madrid is completely detached from reality,” Tebas said. “Such claims provide a convenient way to hide other weaknesses that have already become evident during the opening matches. Blaming an alleged conspiracy is easier than accounting for what is taking place on the field.”
