Rangers: Derek McInnes Disapproves of Lengthy Break

News

Rangers entered the break after recording six consecutive wins, with their two most recent victories coming against Celtic in the League Cup and Premiership.

The turnaround was crucial for McInnes, who received September’s Premiership manager of the month award. It also helped his team recover from a difficult beginning to his Ibrox tenure, which included elimination from European competition.

McInnes admitted there is no doubt that Rangers must maintain their momentum. He also disclosed that he recently had lunch with Sir Alex Ferguson at the club’s training facility.

Ferguson frequently attended matches at Tynecastle last season while McInnes guided Hearts through an unexpected challenge for the title.

McInnes said Ferguson spent time chatting informally with him and the coaching staff. He added that the experienced former manager has always offered valuable encouragement, not only to him but likely to many other coaches.

Although they had spoken several times since McInnes joined Rangers, meeting Ferguson face to face was particularly welcome following his recent health concerns.

Ferguson had admired the work being done at Hearts and often visited the club. However, he understood why McInnes wanted to accept the opportunity at Ibrox, and the pair discussed the decision in considerable depth.

Drawing on his own challenging early period at Manchester United, Ferguson stressed that the conclusion of a season matters more than its beginning and that progress can require patience.

He was especially impressed by Rangers’ commanding display at Celtic Park.
