Ebbsfleet United have been cleared to begin their campaign on Saturday following the National League’s decision to end the club’s suspension.
The Kent side’s opening six National League South fixtures were postponed while it worked to resolve continuing financial difficulties. Those problems had prompted His Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) to file a winding-up petition concerning debts unpaid since April.
John O’Leary’s takeover last month enabled Ebbsfleet to settle all outstanding payments owed to HMRC and the players.
The club expressed its gratitude to everyone for their patience and understanding, while also praising the players and staff for their professional conduct during a challenging period, it announced, external on Wednesday.
The league’s compliance and licensing committee has also imposed a suspended six-point penalty on Ebbsfleet. It will take effect if the club does not meet certain requirements that have not yet been publicly detailed.
Earlier in the week, the sixth-tier team confirmed that it had submitted comprehensive evidence to the National League showing sufficient funds were available to settle every liability. It added that HMRC had verified there were no unpaid balances remaining.
After meeting on Tuesday, the National League’s compliance and licensing committee removed the suspension, clearing Ebbsfleet to face Walton & Hersham on Saturday.
The club is still prohibited from registering new players, however.
In a statement, the National League explained that the committee believes the club must still resolve several matters relating to its rules and regulations. Nevertheless, under the relevant regulations, it decided to lift Ebbsfleet United FC’s suspension immediately. The restriction on player registrations remains active.
The committee added that Ebbsfleet must complete the actions requested of it and that officials will maintain close communication with the club.
