Scotland Nearing Appointment of New Head Coach

The Scottish FA is moving closer to naming a new head coach as Steve Clarke’s successor.

Clarke stepped down after Scotland were eliminated in the group stage of this summer’s World Cup, bringing his seven-year spell in charge to an end despite agreeing a new four-year contract in May.

Scotland’s next matches will come in the Nations League, starting with an away fixture against Slovenia on 26 September as part of a four-game schedule.

Chief executive Ian Maxwell and Craig Mulholland, who became the SFA’s chief football officer in May, are overseeing the effort to find Clarke’s successor.

Maxwell and Mulholland are believed to have held discussions with numerous candidates from both the UK and overseas.

Following a series of interviews, the SFA appears close to making its decision, although it remains uncertain whether the role will go to a Scottish or international coach.

Steven Naismith, previously part of Clarke’s staff as an assistant, said last month that he anticipates remaining involved with the national team when the new coach takes charge.
