Why the Numbers Suggest Guimarães Is Arsenal's Set-Piece Masterstroke

Bruno Guimarães has set an unusual transfer benchmark. His £75m switch to Arsenal represents the highest fee ever paid for a midfielder aged 28 or older.

The statistic requires some context because the previous record belonged to Zinedine Zidane, who left Juventus for Real Madrid 25 years ago and would have commanded a much larger fee in today’s market. Nevertheless, Arsenal’s willingness to invest so heavily in a player approaching his 30s demonstrates how much they value him. This is clearly a signing designed to deliver immediate results.

There are several reasons behind the decision. Guimarães is remarkably durable and can operate in any midfield role within Mikel Arteta’s preferred 4-3-3 system. That versatility could prove invaluable while Declan Rice deals with persistent nerve discomfort in his hamstring and Martin Ødegaard looks to recover after featuring in only 40% of Arsenal’s possible league minutes last season.

The former Newcastle midfielder is also highly effective at disrupting opposition attacks. Arsenal surrendered possession with 1,492 misplaced passes in the attacking third last season, the fourth-highest total in the division. Each mistake created a possible opening for opponents to launch a counterattack.

Guimarães is prepared to concede a free-kick whenever the situation demands it. He committed 45 league fouls last season and reached at least that figure in each of his four complete campaigns at Newcastle. Moisés Caicedo is the only other player to have matched that consistency across the past four seasons.

Despite recording the fourth-highest number of fouls in the competition since his Newcastle debut in February 2022, Guimarães has collected fewer yellow cards than nine other players over the same period. Fouls vary in severity, but officials appear relatively reluctant to caution him.

He receives even more favourable decisions when he is the player being challenged. Guimarães is exceptionally skilled at drawing free-kicks, having been fouled 410 times in the league. That total is more than 100 ahead of every other player during his spell in England.

A comparison with other major European competitions, where officials generally award fouls more readily than in England, makes his record even more impressive. Only Lazio winger Mattia Zaccagni, with 418, has drawn more fouls. Vinicius Júnior holds a narrow advantage per 90 minutes, recording 2.95 compared with Guimarães’ 2.89, and he was another player Arsenal had hoped to recruit.

Guimarães finished either first or second for fouls won in each of the past four league seasons. On two occasions, he led the corresponding rankings across England, France, Germany, Italy and Spain. That ability is especially attractive to a side that consistently turns dead-ball situations into goals. Better still for Arsenal, only two players have scored more goals from set plays than Guimarães in the league since the beginning of 2022, and one of those players is already at the club.

His tally of 12 is the joint-highest among midfielders and forwards. The move to the Emirates also reunites him with fellow Brazilian Gabriel Magalhães, one of the defenders ranked ahead of him.

The 28-year-old is not Newcastle’s only major departure this summer. Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon were key contributors and both ranked among the club’s top four players for free-kicks earned last season. However, their combined total remained below Guimarães’ figure, and neither found the net from a set play.

Given Arsenal’s tactical approach and their strength from dead-ball situations, Guimarães’ distinctive qualities may justify the £75m investment despite his age.
