Anthony Taylor has confirmed he is stepping away from top-level officiating, closing a remarkable career that spanned over 20 years and featured 831 games.
Regarded as one of England’s most accomplished referees, the 47-year-old oversaw 668 matches within the domestic professional setup. His final assignment proved to be the last-16 clash between Portugal and Spain at the World Cup held in the United States.
Looking back, Taylor remarked: “Taking charge of fixtures at the highest level has been a tremendous honour, but the relentless demands and constant evaluation take their toll. Now is the right moment to move on and embrace the next phase of my professional life.
“I owe an enormous debt of thanks to my assistants Gary and Adam, my fellow officials and everyone across the sport who has backed me through the years. Above all, I want to recognise my loved ones for standing by me through all the sacrifices this path has required.”
Across 16 campaigns in the top tier, the referee handled 432 Premier League contests and was selected for every major domestic showpiece. His achievements include overseeing the FA Cup finals of 2017 and 2020, the 2015 League Cup final, the 2015 Community Shield and the 2018 Championship play-off final.
Taylor also forged a distinguished international path, spending 14 years on the global list. That period saw him participate in two World Cups (2022 and 2026), two European Championships (2020 and 2024) and two Club World Cups (2022 and 2025).

From the 163 international matches he supervised, Taylor was given the whistle for some of the sport’s most significant occasions, including the 2020 Uefa Super Cup, the 2021 Nations League final, the 2022 Club World Cup final, the 2023 Europa League final and a Champions League semi-final in 2024.
Howard Webb, Pro Ref’s leading refereeing official, commented: “Anthony has offered exceptional service to football for many years, at home and abroad. He was consistently chosen for the grandest stages, and overseeing Portugal against Spain at this summer’s World Cup served as a fitting culmination to a stellar career.
“Over a long period he has repeatedly shown why he ranks among the finest and most decorated officials this country has ever produced. Yet his influence extends beyond the pitch – the professionalism he exhibits and the backing he gives to colleagues and aspiring referees speak volumes about his personality.
“We are grateful for his huge contribution and wish him every success as he enters the next stage of his journey.”
