Women’s World Cup Play-Offs: Scotland Adapt to Caroline Weir’s Absence

News

Cuthbert and Weir are two players who stepped onto the biggest stage at a young age and have stayed there ever since.

The pair joined Chelsea and Arsenal respectively while still in their teens. Cuthbert has regularly collected silverware in London, while Weir’s journey has taken her from Manchester to Madrid and, most recently, Lyon.

Many in France will be anxiously awaiting news about the injury that forced the two-time Ballon d’Or nominee to withdraw from the starting side.

Scotland supporters will share that concern, with the two matches against Sweden only seven weeks away.

Players of such quality were always going to be missed, but the extent to which Andreatta’s team depends on them remains troubling.

The opening leg on Friday followed a similar pattern, as Scotland’s experienced players guided the team through.

A brilliant contribution from Weir gave Scotland momentum before Claire Emslie, scoring for the first time since becoming a mother, provided the vital breathing room. Cuthbert also made her first appearance since June.

Like Weir, she would give everything to help Scotland reach the World Cup. Taking on Sweden, semi-finalists at the past two World Cups, may demand exactly that level of determination.

Cuthbert openly admitted she was worried after her friend had to withdraw in Paisley, as Weir is not someone who leaves the field lightly.

“Caroline rarely stays down without a genuine reason,” she said.

“If she believes she cannot carry on, it naturally makes me concerned. I hope she recovers in time to face Sweden.”

Speaking shortly after the match, Andreatta could offer no further details and described the decision to take her off in Paisley as a precaution.

St Mirren’s ground will host Scotland’s women’s team again on 1 December, with the return meeting taking place in Stockholm four days afterward.

The demanding double-header will require Scotland to be at full strength and performing at their best if they are to advance.

The in-form Davidson will be eager to have the exceptional Cuthbert and Weir playing alongside her.
