The United Kingdom’s two national television partners face a demanding schedule as they determine which World Cup round-of-32 fixtures each will broadcast in the coming days.
The two networks share domestic coverage of the tournament, with the matches divided equally between them across the competition.
The 72-match group phase will finish early on Sunday morning in British Summer Time, after which attention will quickly shift to the opening knockout stage.
The next phase begins at 20:00 BST on Sunday, when co-hosts Canada meet South Africa in the first of its 16 fixtures.
Shortly after the group stage ends, executives from both networks will begin allocating the matches in the round of 32.
One broadcaster will have the opening choice among the 16 fixtures once every matchup has been officially established, as several pairings will remain uncertain until all group games are complete.
With the first knockout fixture starting roughly 15 hours after the group phase finishes, both networks must also make late adjustments to their planned schedules after learning which games they will televise.
A network representative said: “Sunday will begin early and last a long time as we confirm our fixtures for the opening knockout stage and organize everything required to cover them. Nevertheless, we are excited to announce our schedule for the first round of 32 at a World Cup.”
The round-of-32 fixtures are scheduled to be played from Sunday, 28 June through Saturday, 4 July, according to British Summer Time.
