Carrick can draw plenty of encouragement from a pre-season campaign spanning five weeks and six fixtures.
Although a record of two victories, two draws and two losses may appear unremarkable, the preparations delivered several clear advantages.
Midfielder Andrey Santos has already demonstrated considerable promise. The 22-year-old, who arrived from Chelsea for £48m, joined Patrick Dorgu and Ayden Heaven as the only players to start all six matches. He stood out through his ball circulation, positional awareness and communication.
Youri Tielemans, another significant Manchester United recruit, plays with a composure reminiscent of Carrick and could bring greater confidence to the entire side. His developing partnership with captain Bruno Fernandes is already showing encouraging signs.
Bryan Mbeumo looked energetic and influential, resembling the player who excelled during the opening half of last season rather than the fatigued figure seen after returning from Africa Cup of Nations duty.
Heaven performed strongly in defence, while Leny Yoro also impressed, especially at right-back. Amad Diallo produced promising moments after coming back from World Cup duty. Similar potential was evident in Shea Lacey, the highly rated 19-year-old academy prospect who must be introduced gradually.
Despite those positive developments, several concerns remain.
New striker Benjamin Sesko and goalkeeper Karl Darlow did not make an appearance. Mason Mount, arguably the standout performer in the opening three fixtures, also remained unavailable after suffering a foot injury against Paris St-Germain on 8 August and being withdrawn as a precaution.
Several members of Carrick’s squad in Poland this weekend do not appear to be part of the club’s long-term plans.
Toby Collyer replaced Mount in midfield, but he is expected to continue his career elsewhere. Club officials believe the young player is likely to attract substantial interest.
Harry Amass provided cover for Luke Shaw at full-back, though the plan is also for him to depart. A temporary loan move is considered more probable than a permanent transfer.
Among the more senior players, Joshua Zirkzee remains a well-liked and talented member of the group. However, his performances have lacked consistency, and he does not have a clearly defined role. At times, Lacey was selected ahead of him in the number 10 position.
A return to Serie A for the former Bologna player could be a sensible outcome if an Italian club submits a financially suitable proposal.
Manchester United must also resolve the uncertainty surrounding Marcus Rashford.
The current expectation is that Rashford will remain at Old Trafford.
Nevertheless, his departure cannot yet be ruled out, explaining why Carrick and the forward’s team-mates have avoided giving conclusive answers when discussing his future.
