Aston Villa have seen an offer of approximately £18m, plus additional payments, turned down by Southampton for defender Taylor Harwood-Bellis.
Villa are seeking reinforcements as England international Ezri Konsa prepares to complete a transfer to Arsenal for a fee exceeding £50m.
Harwood-Bellis joined Southampton in 2023, initially on a temporary deal, and has made one appearance for England, which came against the Republic of Ireland in the 2024 Nations League.
Southampton reportedly value the defender at about £25m after finishing fourth in the Championship last season, before the Spygate controversy brought their play-off campaign to an end.
Harwood-Bellis developed through Manchester City’s youth system but did not make a senior appearance for the club.
Following their Europa League triumph in May, Villa have parted with several important players, including Youri Tielemans, who joined Manchester United, Morgan Rogers, who moved to Chelsea, and Lucas Digne, who signed for Paris St-Germain.
Goalkeeper Emi Martinez and Ollie Watkins, Villa’s leading Premier League goalscorer, have also been the subject of transfer speculation.
Villa added goalkeeper Zion Suzuki and left-back Matteo Ruggeri to their squad this week. Their other summer arrivals include midfielder Joao Gomes from Wolves and attacker Johan Manzambi from Freiburg.
