Fofana says joining Chelsea fulfilled a childhood ambition, having supported the London club while growing up in Marseille because of his admiration for former striker Didier Drogba.
Yet Chelsea ended the previous Premier League campaign in 10th place and completed the season without securing any silverware.
Many fans appeared to make Fofana a target for their frustration, particularly after a video showed him smiling on the bench during a heavy Champions League loss to Paris St-Germain in March.
He played down the meaning of that moment and insisted those within the club understand his attitude. However, he acknowledged that people often look for someone to hold responsible when a team struggles and said he was willing to accept that role.
Fofana added that his substantial transfer fee created high expectations. He arrived determined to become one of the leading players in his position and contribute to the team’s success, so he accepts facing criticism when results deteriorate.
The French defender could have placed responsibility on the club. Enzo Maresca departed following disagreements with senior officials, while successor Liam Rosenior went five matches without either a victory or a goal and lost the confidence of much of the squad during his four months in charge.
Fofana admitted those circumstances might be used as an explanation, but maintained that the players must take responsibility. He said they did not give enough, delivered several disappointing displays and fell short in numerous areas.
He stressed that those problems cannot be carried into the next campaign, adding that everyone understood what had gone wrong and had honestly assessed their own contribution.
However, he believes certain boundaries must never be breached.
Fofana, who is Muslim and has an Ivorian father, received racist abuse through social media during the previous season. He had also drawn attention to similar attacks in March 2025.
Although reading such messages is painful, he remains determined to challenge them publicly.
He said revealing the people responsible requires little effort but carries considerable importance. In his view, players must make the public aware of the abusive language being directed at them.
Fofana called for greater education and urged social media companies to take stronger action. He shared the abuse publicly because he believes these platforms must better recognize the seriousness of the issue.
He emphasized that the problem extends far beyond football, arguing that online platforms make it too easy to post offensive remarks. He also suggested that some senders may react thoughtlessly rather than hold consistently racist beliefs.
As an example, he explained that people may send monkey emojis after a disappointing result, only to praise and support him if he scores in the following match.
Fofana said people must learn that such language is unacceptable. Supporters are entitled to feel frustrated when a player is dismissed, he added, but disappointment can never justify racist abuse.
He said younger teammates have shown him comparable messages after games but decided against reporting them. Having encountered this treatment since he was young, Fofana intends to keep speaking publicly about it, even when doing so brings criticism of his personality.
