Simon Parker on Southampton Women’s Difficult Summer

Southampton Women have seen their funding substantially reduced following what head coach Simon Parker described as a difficult summer.

As a result of the changes, most of the team’s home fixtures will now take place at Eastleigh FC’s Silverlake Stadium rather than St Mary’s Stadium, which had hosted them for the previous four seasons.

With the new season due to begin a week on Sunday, Parker said Southampton are working with the lowest budget in the division, forcing the club to significantly revise its plans for the 2026-27 campaign.

Parker acknowledged that several developments had made the summer a particularly demanding period for the team.

Club sources have rejected suggestions that the reduction in funding is connected to the spying controversy.

Southampton’s men’s side were excluded from last season’s Championship play-offs after the club admitted monitoring opposing teams, and they began the current campaign with a four-point deduction.

During the 2025-26 season, Southampton Women challenged for promotion before eventually placing fifth, their best league finish since the club was re-established nine years earlier.

Parker described the previous campaign as an encouraging first season, noting that the original target was a top-half finish and that remaining in promotion contention for much of the year represented significant progress.

He explained that the club had intended to retain and reconnect with many of its important players, but changing circumstances required it to adopt a new approach.

It was also announced earlier in the summer that director of football Marieanne Spacey-Cale would leave her role after playing a central part in the development of Southampton’s women’s team.
