Overall, Fernandes endured a difficult start to the season, joining several teammates in delivering a disappointing performance during the unexpected 2-0 loss at Hull City.
His fortunes changed dramatically on Tuesday when he received the PFA Players’ Player of the Year prize, recognising his outstanding role in helping United return to the Champions League following a two-season absence.
During the previous campaign, he registered a Premier League-record 21 assists.
After the match got under way, Fernandes struggled to make an impact as the hosts fell behind against Gary O’Neil’s team.
However, when his chance arrived, Fernandes made it count.
The 31-year-old initially struck a powerful equaliser after Marcelino Nunez slipped despite being under no pressure. That mistake gave Matheus Cunha a clear path towards the Ipswich goal, enabling him to create the opportunity for his captain.
Fernandes later remained composed and emphatically converted a penalty in front of the Stretford End, putting his side 3-1 ahead after 60 minutes. Having failed to score twice from the spot during pre-season, he was likely carrying considerable personal pressure as he took the kick.
Seven minutes later, Fernandes sealed his third hat-trick for United. Yet that achievement might have been eclipsed had his ambitious attempt from 55 yards gone in after Ipswich surrendered possession immediately following the restart.
Kjell Scherpen hurried back towards his goal and was relieved to see the ball land on the roof of the net instead of crossing the line.
“He is hugely important to us,” Carrick said when invited to assess Fernandes’ influence.
“He is our captain and has spent several years at the club, experiencing a wide range of emotions along the way.
“On days like this, when you need key players to produce something extra, he delivered an excellent performance.”
