Newcastle United are nearing an agreement to sign Lille attacker Matias Fernandez-Pardo for a fee that could rise to £55m.
After completing seven transfers this summer, Newcastle have continued their efforts to add another attacking player before the window closes.
Fernandez-Pardo was notably omitted from Lille’s squad for last week’s 2-2 draw with Paris St-Germain. The 21-year-old was also instructed to train separately from the senior team until Tuesday’s deadline while his future is decided.
Newcastle are putting the finishing touches on the transfer, which may allow fellow attacker Nick Woltemade to join Juventus on loan following interest from the Italian club.
The Belgian forward has been on Newcastle’s radar since former head coach Eddie Howe was in charge, and his profile matches the club’s preferred age bracket.
Among players aged 21 or younger in Europe’s five leading leagues last season, Fernandez-Pardo placed second for clear scoring opportunities with 21. He was fifth for both touches inside the opposition penalty area with 184 and shots on target with 30, while ranking seventh for combined goals and assists with 13.
His versatility across several attacking roles further increased his appeal as manager Matthias Jaissle sought to improve the squad.
“We understand which areas need improving,” he said following Saturday’s 2-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur. “Ross [Wilson, the sporting director] is doing excellent work.
“There are still a few days remaining, but we will stay calm and avoid making a reckless move that we do not consider right.
“The key point is that everyone at management and leadership level is in agreement and working with the same understanding.”
