The Everton Fans’ Forum released a detailed statement strongly criticising the club, arguing that the Toffees were left with a squad lacking sufficient depth in several crucial positions.
The group said the outcome of the summer transfer window had raised major concerns among supporters about Everton’s recruitment strategy, preparation and decision-making.
It stressed that fans were not calling for irresponsible spending and recognised the financial limits facing the club. Nor were they seeking high-profile arrivals merely for appearances.
Instead, supporters wanted the club to demonstrate effective management, proper planning and responsibility for its actions.
The influential volunteer group The 1878s also voiced similar concerns after deadline day. The group has produced large flags, banners and tifos to improve the atmosphere at Everton’s new Hill Dickinson Stadium, with Moyes previously praising its work as exceptional.
In response to the club’s transfer activity, The 1878s announced that it would suspend its work indefinitely, explaining that its members shared the wider fanbase’s deep frustration and anger over how the window, particularly its final stages, had unfolded.
The group also clarified that every flag design must comply with stadium rules governing the language and imagery permitted during displays, meaning offensive or insulting material cannot be used.
It added that, although members would like to use flags inside the stadium to express their dissatisfaction, disappointment and anger, such displays would not receive approval under the existing regulations.
Alongside the deadline-day arrivals of Grealish and Maitland-Niles, Everton completed several other deals during the window, including the signing of PFA Championship Player of the Year Hayden Hackney from Middlesbrough.
Christian Norgaard joined from Arsenal as a replacement for experienced midfielder Idrissa Gueye, who had departed. However, the 32-year-old Denmark international is injured and has no confirmed return date.
The club also finalised moves for young German midfielder Merlin Rohl and England Under-21 winger Tyrique George, who had spent the previous season on loan. Brennan Johnson arrived from Crystal Palace in a direct exchange involving Dwight McNeil.
Those additions were nevertheless eclipsed by a chaotic final day of the transfer window. Overall, Everton appear to have finished the recruitment period with a considerably weaker squad than the one they had at the outset.
Everton have not yet publicly addressed the events that prompted fierce criticism, supporter protests and declining confidence in owners TFG. Repairing those damaged relationships is likely to require significant effort.
Whether the club can successfully rebuild that trust remains uncertain.
