Mbappé Brace Seals Late Real Madrid Win at Barcelona After Raphinha Equaliser | La Liga

Barcelona European club football Football La Liga Real Madrid Sport

Thirteen years on, José Mourinho brought Real Madrid to Camp Nou and departed with a dramatic last-gasp win that transformed the outlook of the contest. With only three minutes left and Madrid’s intensity beginning to fade, Jude Bellingham produced a brilliant move to release Eduardo Camavinga for one final charge forward. Camavinga burst into the penalty area, escaped Pau Cubarsí and cut the ball back for Kylian Mbappé to finish.

The match had been fierce, relentless and full of tension, but Madrid emerged victorious as Mbappé scored his second goal of an unforgettable encounter and ended Barcelona’s nine-match winning streak. Predictions of a one-sided defeat and a nine-point Barcelona advantage before November suddenly disappeared. Madrid and the title race remain very much alive, while their manager’s carefully designed strategy worked exactly as intended, though not in the way many had anticipated.

Barcelona controlled possession at the start, yet Madrid registered the first attempt moments after winning the ball. An unusually careless pass from Pedri allowed Arda Guler to race down the right and shoot over after four minutes. It established an early pattern and illustrated how both teams intended to approach the game. Marc Cucurella and Lamine Yamal were already locked in a personal contest, with the Madrid full-back attempting to unsettle the winger. Guler being caught offside near the halfway line also highlighted Barcelona’s aggressive defensive line and high-risk approach.

That initial picture proved misleading because Madrid were prepared to attack, press intensely and prevent Barcelona from finding a comfortable rhythm. Pedri and Rodri struggled to settle, while Madrid looked eager to break quickly, with Fede Valverde stretching the field through long diagonal passes. One of those deliveries sent Mbappé racing down the left toward the box. Although his path was blocked, Madrid moved the ball to Guler, whose effort was awkwardly pushed away by Joan García. The frantic pace suited Madrid, with Mbappé and Yan Diomandé presenting a constant danger.

Barcelona attempted to establish control but initially found it difficult. They remained dangerous in open space, however, and a forward run from Pedri ended with Raphinha firing over. Anthony Gordon then surged ahead and used a clever backheel to create another opportunity for Raphinha, whose low curling shot narrowly missed the post. The Brazilian soon sent another effort wide. Before then, the match’s demanding tempo had taken its first physical toll, forcing Xavi Espart off before the half-hour mark. Alejandro Balde, who had played only 15 minutes all season, replaced him and was immediately tested by Guler, whose excellent delivery was volleyed over by Mbappé from near the penalty spot.

The action continued from end to end. Gordon forced Andriy Lunin into a sharp save, while the crowd reacted angrily to each increasingly forceful challenge Cucurella made on Lamine Yamal.

Barcelona’s situation deteriorated further in the 41st minute, briefly silencing the stadium. Madrid once again switched play from right to left, where Cucurella released Diomandé, their frequent outlet. He accelerated forward before driving a low cross into the middle. Gerard Martín reached it first but could only deflect the ball against Mbappé and into the goal. Luck played a part, but Madrid had earned their advantage. Lamine Yamal then wasted an excellent chance to equalise, mishitting his attempt wide at the near post.

Barcelona responded after the interval, but outstanding tackles on the edge of the box from Aurélien Tchouaméni and Bellingham prevented Raphinha and Pedri from shooting. Between those interventions, Bellingham broke beyond Cubarsí with Mbappé alongside him, only for Martín, left without support, to halt the attack. Dean Huijsen later denied Raphinha, just as Ibrahima Konaté stopped Lamine Yamal.

Madrid defended impressively in and around their penalty area while maintaining a constant threat on the counterattack. Barcelona may have waited too long before attempting shots, but they were gaining territory and gradually increasing the pressure, even if Hansi Flick remained visibly frustrated. The contest was far from over, and Barcelona drew level on the hour. Lamine Yamal played a short corner to Pedri, who delivered a clever reverse pass at an angle for Raphinha to drive low into the goal.

The volume inside the stadium increased. Raphinha was stopped at one end before Joan García denied Guler at the other. Barcelona attacked once more, and Lunin produced a remarkable save to keep out Martín’s header.

Mbappé then called for a handball after Balde hurriedly cleared the ball away from him. Barcelona had begun to exert more influence, but their control remained uncertain and left them vulnerable whenever Madrid broke forward. The match, the players and the entire stadium grew increasingly tense. Mbappé charged at Barcelona before Pedri raced back and launched another attack, which ended with Lamine Yamal creating space through skillful footwork and sending a shot narrowly wide. Lunin celebrated that escape and did so again when Huijsen slid in to deny Frenkie de Jong. Huijsen later blocked a Lamine Yamal strike with his face and was knocked to the ground, after Gordon had created the opening.

Barcelona continued to push forward as an exhausted Madrid held firm. Even with their energy fading, the visitors still had enough determination to resist and enough composure to deliver the decisive finish.
