Troy Deeney’s Team of the Week Picks: Rayan, Jackson, Konsa, Tel and Suzuki

Shea Charles (Fulham): I was initially reluctant to include a Fulham player because these are the kind of matches they are expected to win. Still, their victory at Coventry, the clean sheet and Charles’ outstanding performances since arriving from Southampton made him impossible to overlook.

He dictated the tempo and brought much-needed energy to a Fulham side that can sometimes appear short of ideas. Since becoming a regular starter, he has helped the team produce better results, and both he and the club deserve credit for that improvement.

Nico Gonzalez (Newcastle): Gonzalez could prove to be Newcastle’s finest signing. The squad already contains plenty of quick young players who are dangerous in wide positions, while the manager wants an energetic, high-intensity approach similar to the old Red Bull Salzburg side. However, every team also needs someone capable of setting the rhythm with sharp one- and two-touch passing, and Gonzalez performs that role superbly. His display was exceptional.

Marcus Tavernier (Bournemouth): Tavernier takes the number 10 role. His selection reflects more than just one performance. Before Bournemouth defeated Sunderland last weekend, concerns were growing about their lack of victories, difficult league campaign and whether competing in the Europa League might be too demanding.

Within a single week, however, they overcame Sunderland, AC Milan and Manchester United. Those results have transformed the mood around their season, with eight goals scored and none conceded. Tavernier found the net during that run, including another goal against United, while also contributing in several other ways. He is simply an excellent footballer.
