Manchester United & Michael Carrick: Manager’s Exit Feels Inevitable, but Owners Face Much Bigger Problems

According to the club’s latest accounts, the debt originally placed upon it has risen beyond £1.15bn. Respected football finance analyst Swiss Ramble estimates that interest costs have reached £852m. The club paid £37m in interest during the most recent financial year, up from £34m a year earlier.

Critics argue that these funds could have been invested more effectively in recruiting stronger players.

Supporters had hoped Ratcliffe, who followed United as a child, would bring about change after agreeing a deal with the Glazers to acquire a minority stake on Christmas Eve 2023.

However, a series of subsequent choices has raised serious concerns about his management of the club.

Regarding the team manager, United’s leadership ultimately decided to retain Erik ten Hag after considering other candidates following the unexpected 2024 FA Cup final victory against Manchester City. The club then spent more than £200m on players including Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt and Manuel Ugarte.

Last week, Ten Hag said in an interview, external that the club broke its commitment not to sell academy graduate and Scotland international Scott McTominay to finance Ugarte’s £50m transfer from Paris St-Germain. The Dutch coach was dismissed in October 2024.

United subsequently convinced Ruben Amorim to leave Sporting midway through the campaign, despite his preference to remain there until the summer.

The club continued to support him after a historically poor 15th-place finish and again following United’s EFL Cup defeat by League Two side Grimsby. He was eventually dismissed in January after disagreeing with director of football Jason Wilcox about the team’s playing approach.

Carrick was then appointed until the season’s conclusion. The role later became permanent after he led United back into the Champions League following a two-season absence.

Removing a third manager in as many seasons would reflect poorly on everyone involved.

The ‘Standards’ banner displayed at the Stretford End featured legendary captains Bryan Robson, Eric Cantona and Roy Keane, reminding the club’s executives of the proud legacy they are expected to uphold.
