Centre-back Guehi’s £20m move from Crystal Palace in January was widely viewed as excellent value.
However, his misplaced pass against Everton near the end of last season proved costly for City, who dropped points in the draw and surrendered momentum to eventual champions Arsenal.
The England international has endured a difficult campaign, having been at fault for both of Ipswich’s goals last weekend before John McGinn dispossessed him deep inside his own half to create Villa’s opener.
He later brought Jackson down near the edge of the penalty area and received a yellow card, before his challenging afternoon ended with a substitution at half-time.
City had initially planned to recruit a right-back during the summer but ultimately focused on other positions, believing Abdukodir Khusanov could provide cover whenever Matheus Nunes is unavailable.
Khusanov began the match in a wide role but found it difficult before moving into central defence to replace Guehi. Rico Lewis then filled the vacant position, with Maresca later admitting that he must “find that balance” at the back.
When asked whether Guehi’s recent performances were a concern, Maresca replied: “No, I have no concerns about Marc.
“He has played virtually every minute since the campaign began, both for us and his national side, which is demanding. His substitution was also influenced by the yellow card.
“Our aggressive approach can make it risky for a defender who has already been booked, but I remain completely confident in him.”
Nevertheless, Maresca has reason to be wary ahead of two meetings with Fabian Hurzeler’s prolific Brighton next week, first in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday and then in the Premier League on Saturday.
The Italian coach must address City’s defensive weaknesses before they develop into a more significant problem.
