Burnley dismiss Nicky Hayen after heavy Lincoln defeat drops them into bottom three | Burnley

Burnley Championship Football Sport

Burnley have dismissed Nicky Hayen after just 14 matches in charge, following a 4-1 loss at Lincoln that dropped the Clarets into the Championship relegation places.

The Belgian coach was hired during the summer as Scott Parker’s permanent replacement after Parker departed in April, when relegation from the Premier League was all but confirmed. Hayen leaves with only one victory, a 4-0 league win away to Watford on 10 October.

In Hayen’s first game, Burnley overcame Notts County on penalties in the Carabao Cup. They then fought back from two goals behind in the final seven minutes to earn a home draw against West Ham in their Championship opener. Heavy defeats to West Brom and Norwich followed, along with a penalty-shootout elimination at Bradford in the Carabao Cup, establishing a worrying run of results.

Burnley had been expected to challenge for promotion after going up in each of their previous two Championship campaigns, but they now face the threat of dropping down. Wolves’ comeback victory at Turf Moor last weekend put Hayen’s position under severe pressure, prompting the club to make a change.

In an official statement, the club confirmed that head coach Nicky Hayen had been removed from his position with immediate effect, explaining that the decision came after an underwhelming opening to the Championship campaign.
