Championship: Middlesbrough rout Bolton to send a warning to their rivals

News

Middlesbrough’s win took them to 25 points from 12 matches, matching their total at the same stage of the previous campaign.

Boro climbed to the top of the standings in early February last season following six consecutive wins. However, Hellberg’s team managed only four victories in their final 15 league fixtures and ended the campaign in fifth place. They later lost to Hull in the play-off final after being restored to the competition when Southampton were removed over a spying incident.

Former Middlesbrough midfielder Neil Maddison nevertheless felt Boro produced their finest display under the Swedish coach at Bolton, a team that had recently defeated Wolves and earned a draw at Southampton.

Maddison described the performance as outstanding, saying that Bolton’s goal near the end of the first half was the only blemish on an otherwise exceptional showing.

He acknowledged that the tempo dropped slightly after the interval but praised Boro’s composure, calling it their best performance since Kim Hellberg took charge.

Maddison also reserved particular praise for player of the match Lankshear.

He said Will Lankshear’s movement was exceptional and made him an exciting player to watch.

Maddison added that Lankshear continues to vary his approach in each match, combining different runs with dropping into deeper positions and steadily improving as the season progresses.
