Shakhtar also assessed Fulham’s Craven Cottage and Brentford’s Gtech Community Stadium while looking for a west London venue capable of hosting top-tier European matches.
Both grounds, however, have lower capacities than Stamford Bridge. Officials believe that fixtures against Europe’s leading teams, or potentially English opponents, could attract enough supporters to fill the larger stadium.
The proposed arrangement aims to engage the capital’s 32,000 Ukraine-born residents, based on the latest Office for National Statistics data, as well as the roughly 100,000 people with Ukrainian roots across the UK.
Chelsea’s ground is available because the club finished 10th in the Premier League last season and did not qualify for European competition.
As a result, major fixture conflicts are unlikely, although any extra matches would still require permission from Hammersmith and Fulham Council and Uefa.
